Doryanthes Excelsa - Gymea Lily.
Well-known in cultivation, the Gymea Lily is a favourite rockery plant with Australian gardeners. It has large broad spear-like leaves to 1 metre long that are often used in floral arrangements. The huge flower spike can reach 6 metres high and the red flower head is up to 30cm across consisting of several separate flower segments. Its native to New South Wales but commonly grown all around Australia including tropical areas. The leaves are frost tolerant to -7oC and the flowers are frost sensitive. Excelsa prefers a well-drained soil, full sun and is often used as a feature plant because of its striking appearance.
