Dryandra Praemorsa - Urchin Dryandra. Dryandras are renowned for their excellent flowers and the Urchin Dryandra is probably the most widely cultivated and well known among Australian plant enthusiasts. The large yellow flower heads grow to around 6cm across appearing in spring and are popular for use in fresh or dried floral arrangements. The leaves are toothed and dark green contrasting wonderfully with the bright yellow flowers. Native birds are attracted to the flowers and the plant is frost tolerant. It grows to about 2 metres high and wide and prefers well drained friable soils and will accept semi-shade but full sun is preferable for maximum flower development. Built up garden beds are ideal for this plant that is also accepting of coastal sites and dry areas. Originating in Western Australia, this spectacular Dryandra does well in the Eastern states when given ample drainage and will also benefit from occasional pruning assisting in flower development and shaping. It's a fast growing shrub deserving of a place in any garden.
